NYCC '07: JOE QUESADA's CUP 'O JOE PANEL
You can't have a con without a Cup 'O Joe, and Joe Quesada's Q&A was held Saturday evening at the New York Comic Con.

Marvel’s Jim McCann opened the panel by introducing Marvel's Editor-in-Chief for a day, Chris Genung, who began by commenting that he had made the decision during his day at Marvel, that smoking is back, and Nick Fury will be back smoking again in Marvel Comics. Genung then introduced Quesada to a packed room.

Quesada then brought Editor Bill Rosemann, Christos Gage, Dan Buckley and Arthur Suydam up on the dais with him. Quesada gave the introduction to the Cup ‘O Joe panel, by starting off with a slide show.

  • Starting off, Quesada showed art from Spider-Man One More Day, written by JMS with art by Quesada, due to start in August.

  • Quesada then announced Daredevil: End of Days by Brian Bendis, David Mack, Klaus Janson, Bill Sienkiewicz and Alex Maleev. The title is a "The End" story for Daredevil, according to Quesada.

  • Showing a slide for Marvel Zombies materials, Quesada announced that Arthur Suydam has signed an exclusive with the company.

  • From there, Quesada moved on to announcing Annihilation: Conquest, turning the mic over to Rosemann to talk about the upcoming event that will follow-up Annihilation

Here’s how it will roll out:

Annihilation: Conquest Prologue - Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Brian Denham, Aleksi Briclot - June 2007

Annihilation: Conquest: Quasar - Christos Gage, Eric Basaldua, Rick Basaldua, Matt Wilson - July 2007

Annihilation: Conquest: Starlord - Keith Giffen, Timothy Green II, Nic Klein - July 2007

Annihilation: Conquest: Wraith - Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Kyle Hotz, Clint Langley - July 2007

Annihilation: Conquest - Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Tom Raney, Aleksi Briclot – November 2007

Included in the larger Conquest project, Rosemann said there will be three miniseries and four issues of the ongoing Nova series all taking part.

Asked to comment on Quasar, Gage declined to spill to many details about the book, noting only that Quasar and Moondragon are on an important quest, the goal of which is important to Conquest as a whole. Rosemann described the min--series as "Joan of Arc in space."

Annihilation: Conquest: Starlord according Rosemann follows the original Starlord sent on a suicide mission and joined by a band of misfits including Groot, Captain Universe, Deathcry, Mantis, Bug of Micronauts fame, and Rocket Raccoon. Rosemann described the titles as Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandoes in space.

Covers of the mini-series will be by Nic Klein.

Also in the lineup, Annihilation: Conquest – Wraith will feature a new character called the Wraith, who carries a Western feel and element, but is much darker and grittier than Marvel space heroes of the past.

These mini-series lead into the six-issue Annihilation: Conquest mini-series running from November of 2007 through April 2009, written by Abnett and Lanning, and drawn by Tom Raney.

  • Moving to other imprints, Quesada announced that Orson Scott Card will write a new, exclusive Ender's Game story that will only appear in the Red Prophet hardcover collection which collects the first six issues in July. The story will be called "The Gold Bug."

  • As an answer to many suggestions from fans, Buckley announced that Marvel will be collecting the covers drawn by artists for the Hero Initiative Ultimate 100 - 100 covers of Ultimate Spider-Man #100 drawn by various artists which are being auctioned off to generate funds for Heroes Initiative. The collected volume will, according to a Marvel source speaking to Newsarama, include all the covers except the cover drawn by Todd McFarlane. The release date for the collected edition will be announced soon, and will be distributed through the Hero Initiative.

Quesada took a moment from the presentation to urge fans to support the Hero Initiative, saying that it is the best way to show respect for the creators of the stepping stones that the industry rests upon today.

  • Quesada also announced a Halo ongoing, naming Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev as the surprise creative team on the new series.

  • Turning the floor over to Q&A, the first fan asked about Marvel Apes as Quesada has long teased. Quesada answered back by saying that he has an editor who's ready to do it, and said that "Marvel Apes" will become a reality.

  • Two projects also announced at the panel was New Avengers/Transformers and Mystic Arcane, and you can find much more details and art on those projects by checking out our front page...

  • Will we see more Adam Warlock? Rosemann: Good question - he's one of the big guns, but you have to have the right story. We’re looking at all the characters, and if we have the right story, then yeah.

  • Now that Speedball is dead [sort of], who's next on your hit list? Quesada: Squirrel Girl. She stores your nuts.

  • Rosemann: If you like Speedball, check out Nova #3 which features Nova meeting Penance.

  • Will you bring back the Ultraverse? Buckley: Go to the back issue bins and enjoy yourself.

Quesada: [laughs] What do you want him to do in the back issue bins?

  • Will we see Hawkeye again soon? Quesada: You haven’t seen the last of the guy with the bow and arrow.

  • What about a Cloak and Dagger mini or ongoing? Quesada: We’d like to se one.

Cebulski: Joe’s rejected like 20 of my Cloak and Dagger pitches so far.

Quesada: There's no rush to get them out there now, I'd rather wait for the right story, rather than just get "a" story out there.

  • When will Young Avengers be coming back as an ongoing? Quesada: We’re finding the right time, and there will be an announcement coming.

  • Will the Punisher become the new Captain America? Quesada: Nah - he just likes the mask - he's just going to go home and wear it, saying "I'm Captain America!"

McCann: Watch for the Punisher War Journal issues that are coming up as part of the Initiative tied-in issues.

  • What stays and what goes in the Marvel Magic Handbook? Cebulski: Part of the upcoming event is to make sense of what stays and what goes.

Is there chaos magic anymore? Cebulski: That's something that we'll probably address.

  • Will Nick Fury be coming back for this year? Quesada: Maybe.

McCann: He's been back in the pages of Captain America.

But will he be back back? Quesada: Well, Tony Stark's in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. now, so just keep reading.

  • Will there be pushes for new talent? Cebulski: Watch this summer - there will be some new initiatives begun.

  • Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa mentioned that a big, magic epic is coming up - is it Mystic Arcana, or something separate? Cebulski: It's something different, but Arcana sets up the world where what Sacasa is talking about.

  • Will Ash ever return in comics? Quesada: From my point of view, it seems self-serving to bring him into the Marvel Universe.

  • When will we see Ultimates #13? April or May.

If it's not done by then, Buckley said, he will give everyone Bryan Hitch's email address so they can flood his inbox.

  • When will we see more Nextwave? Quesada: I'm leaving it up to Warren [Ellis]. He feels that Stuart [Immonen] is integral to the book, so we'll see when that may be. I love that book.

  • When will we see Ultimates 3 start? Buckley: Joe Maduriera is finishing issue #2, but not announcing when it will start to ship yet.

  • Will we ever see Ultimate Wolverine/Hulk? Quesada: The script for issue #3 is in, and Damon Lindeloff should have the script for #4 soon. While Damon is mortified that it's taken this long, he does have this little thing called Lost that takes up his time.

  • When will we see Ultimate Iron Man 2 by Orson Scott Card? Quesada: OSC has two scripts in, but we don't want to start production until they're all in.

  • Reiterating an answer from New Joe Fridays from just last week, asked about the genies he wants back in bottles, Quesada said that the first was the number of mutants, which was accomplished by Decimation and House of M; second put the Marvel Universe back to a place where the heroes interacted more like they did closer to the inception (Civil War, and the third - "I'm not saying. Although I will say that it happens this year."

  • Will we see Eddie Brock as Venom again? McCann: Yes, in an upcoming issue of Sensational Spider-Man.

  • Will we find out what happened to Illyana Rasputin after House of M? McCann: New X-Men #37 and on.

  • Will Marvel be creating new characters soon, rather than revamping older ones? Quesada: There's a book coming up soon which will feature a lot of new villains.

  • When will we see more Squadron Supreme? McCann: There will be an announcement soon.

  • Will Astonishing X-Men end after Whedon leaves? Quesada: No - we'll be making an announcement soon.

  • Will Ant-Man in Irredeemable Ant-Man join an Avengers team? McCann: Read Irredeemable Ant-Man #6.

  • Any hints as to who's following Whedon on Runaways? Quesada: We'll have a big announcement on that, but it's too soon to say.

  • Will anyone die in World War Hulk: Quesada: DC's sales.

  • Question from a younger fan: could you make an alternate universe story where the Venom suit would go on Hulk? [entire panel stops, thinks, and says, "Wowwww"] Quesada: Pak - write that down. And here's a new exclusive - this kid is the new writer on Mighty Avengers - Bendis, you're fired.

  • Is Omega the Unknown coming soon? Quesada: It's being worked on, but this is one of those cases where we have time. It stands alone in the Marvel Universe, so we're wafting for it to be completely written before we announce it. Just like Charlie Huston was very respectful of what happened in Moon Knight before, Jonathan Lethem is with Omega. It's just beautiful.

  • Any more plans for Adam Warren’s Live Wires? Molly Lazer: Iron Man: Hypervelocity #3.

  • Will there be a sequel to Agents of Atlas? Buckley: The numbers were pretty good, it was an office favorite, and are looking at ways to get a second series out there.
